Join Colleagues at Löwenbräukeller

Tuesday, December 17 – 7:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.

This traditional tavern houses a rustic restaurant, a historic beer hall (or Schwemme as it is known to the locals) and an authentic beer garden where you can bring your own Brotzeit (a traditional snack of meat, bread and cheese) as is the custom in Munich. The people of Munich have their first monarch, King Max I Joseph of Bavaria, to thank for this rule. His “Beer Garden Decree” from 1812 is still in place to this day. However, visitors must purchase their drinks when in a beer garden.

For more than 130 years, the beer garden of the Löwenbräukeller has been one of the most popular in the city.  The old chestnut trees offer a lot of shade even during the hottest of summers to relish a cold, fresh pint of Löwenbräu.  Even at the festive opening in 1883, there was a lot going on at the Löwenbräukeller: “Exceptionally large crowds from the general public” packed into the building and four regimental bands played, it says in the commemorative records at the time.

IMPORTANT:  You must have your badge and social event ticket to gain entry.  You MUST have both.  No exceptions.

Social Event – Opt. Out Option

We understand that you may not be able to join the ICIS 2019 Social Event on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 due to your schedule.  If you wish to officially ‘opt-out’ of the Social Event, and receive a $50 USD refund, please click on the below link for instructions.  Please note that your conference badge will have a code of “No SE” (for No Social Event) and if your plans change, you will not be able to gain entry to the Social Event venue.

Transportation

  • ICM to Löwenbräukeller

    Trains run approximately every 5 minutes from Messestadt West to Königsplatz (1 station after Central Station). From there it is about 1500 feet to Löwenbräukeller.  Volunteers will be present to assist.

    Social Event Transportation – complimentary via subway

    MUST wear conference badge which incudes train pass on the back of the badge.

    • Trains run approx. every 5 minutes.

    ICM to Löwenbräukeller

    • Exit ICM at the main entrance.
    • Immediately turn LEFT and follow the walkway.
    • There will be volunteers along the way to guide you, and can be identified by orange ski hat.
    • The ICM walkway takes you directly to the subway station (near Novotel Hotel), Messestadt West station (Underground Train or U-Bahn in German).
      • Look for  sign
      • At the station there will be ICIS 2019 volunteers to assist.
      • No scanner or turns styles. MUST have conference badge.
    • Take the escalator down to the platform.
      • Conference volunteers will be assembling groups to go on the trains together, so look for the orange ski hats.  Please locate one.
    • Take the U2 train line, direction to Feldmoching station, which is indicated on the screens.
      • Volunteers will NOT get on the trains but stay behind to assemble the next groups.
    • Königsplatz station is 14 stops/approx. 22 minutes.
      • It is one stop after the central station (“Hauptbahnhof” in German).
      • Two stops before reaching Königsplatz, volunteers will get on the train. Please look around in the car for the signature orange ski hat. It helps volunteers to find you if you stay together in a group and display your ICIS badge.
      • Please be alert as to when the volunteer(s) exit and/or when you reach Königsplatz. It is good practice to get ready at the central station, one stop before Königsplatz.
    • Disembark at Königsplatz
    • Follow signs to Exit A
      • There will be a volunteer at the end of the platform.
    • After reaching the ground level, walk straight ahead, next to the construction site.
    • Löwenbräukeller is approximately 2 blocks up the road.
      • It is brightly lit and easy to spot. In addition, there will be a volunteer along the way.

  • Löwenbräukeller to ICM

    GETTING THERE FROM CENTRAL STATION

    Getting to the ICM from the central station (Hauptbahnhof) in downtown Munich takes less than 30 minutes.

    PUBLIC TRANSPORT

    The ICM is directly connected to the underground stations Messestadt West and Messestadt Ost of the U2 line.

    The ride from central station takes less than 20 minutes, no need to change lines.

    The U2 subway line direction Messestadt Ost runs from 04:00 in the morning to 01:00 at night, Monday to Friday between 06:00 and 20:00 every 5 minutes.

  • Taxi

    A cab ride from Munich central station (Hauptbahnhof) to the ICM takes about 25 minutes.

    A taxi stand is available at the entrance of the ICM.
