A new workshop for mid-career faculty, by mid-career faculty!

Have you reached that milestone of tenure and are wondering “now what?”  An article in the Chronicle of Higher Education identified associate professors as the least likely group to be happy in academia.  It’s not uncommon for associate professors to think, “there has to be something more than writing research grants, publishing, and teaching.” (Wilson 2012).

Although this crisis of meaning may be common in one’s mid-career, these views are rarely discussed openly.  The Mid-Career Faculty workshop seeks to create an environment for mid-career faculty to discover opportunities, exchange experiences, and establish new connections with peers.

If you are an associate professor, join us at the first AMCIS Mid-Career Faculty Workshop at AMCIS 2014 in Savannah on Thursday, August 7 from 7:30 am to 2:45 pm, at the Westin Savannah Hotel.

This mid-career faculty workshop is a peer-led workshop specifically for those that have reached milestones of tenure and/or associate professor and are now wondering how best to move forward in their career.  The facilitators and panelists are comprised of mid-career faculty that have chosen options such as administration, pursuit of grants, editorial positions, switching schools, focus on teaching or outreach, among others.  The panelists are from a mix of research-oriented universities and teaching-oriented universities.

The theme of this workshop is “The Mindset after Tenure.”  In our interactive sessions, we’ll discuss the following topics:

  • The Life after Tenure discussion will focus on life in the first three years after tenure.  The struggle (or lack of struggle) to obtain tenure can dramatically impact life in one’s university or in a new university.  After tenure, some people feel isolated, some people are overwhelmed, some are relieved, and some are working in new universities.  There will be an opportunity for panelists and participants to share post-tenure experiences related to establishing a future path and adjusting to life after tenure.
  • The Identifying Goals discussion is aimed at identifying and discussing different types of goals available for associate professors as they consider their future career path.  While the goal of assistant professors is to achieve tenure and promotion, after becoming an associate, opportunities are wide-reaching.  Some people chose to focus on achieving the status of full professor, while others may focus on teaching, administrative duties, grants, service, or other goals.  While the broad range of available options is exciting, it can also be overwhelming.  This interactive discussion will enable panelists and participants to exchange experiences and ideas about the many opportunities available for associate professors as you consider your goals.
  • We are living in a changing world in which teaching, funding, and reward models are evolving.  In the Considering our Future discussion, we’ll discuss how the changing academic environment can affect us as associate professors personally, professionally, and within our universities.
