A workshop for mid-career faculty, by mid-career faculty!
Mid-career Associate Professors should be hitting a stride.  However, without the pressure of an up-or-out tenure decision it can be challenging for mid-career Associate Professors to “find a fit” as one moves forward in their career.  As one article in the Chronicle of Higher Education states, as the traditional roles of the Associate Professor are changing, “the burden is placed on us as individuals to create our own narratives, our own scripts” and to define how we move forward (McLemee, 2002).  With few guidelines available for associate professors, it can be difficult to “find one’s fit”.

Once you have found your fit it can challenging to get the message out to others, yet, creating your personal brand is essential to sustained engagement with your professional community, research community, institution, local business community, or wherever your personal interests and goals are targeted.   “Finding your brand” is creating a tailored message to your professional community to bring recognition of who you are and what you want to be known for.  Having a brand allows you to market yourself in a way that enables you to achieve your individual goals.
This workshop is appropriate for any faculty member that has received tenure and/or promotion to Associate Professor.  Individuals at all stages of associate professor may find this workshop useful, from newly tenured faculty members to those that have settled into their role as an associate professor.  Those that have attended other mid-career workshops are welcome to come, participate, share, and learn from other associate professors.
The theme of this workshop is “Finding Your Fit” as a mid-career Associate Professor.  In our interactive sessions we will discuss the following topics:

  • The Find Your Fit discussion will focus on navigating through the range of choices available for the tenured Associate Professor.  Finding a fit can be making a strategic decision to head in a specific direction, such as; research, teaching, grants, service, or consulting and community engagement.  Finding a fit may also be related to considering a job change to another university or making a substantial shift in the contribution that you make within your own department, college, university, or discipline.
  • The Finding Your Brand discussion is aimed at marketing yourself to your professional community so that you can communicate your “fit”, what you care about, your ideas, professional activities, aspirations and goals, in a way that helps you establish connections, build a network, and find opportunities that interest you.
  • Our professional environment is rapidly evolving and the rules are changing.  In the Finding your Future discussion, we will exchange ideas and discuss contemporary issues that mid-career Associate Professors face as we navigate how we fit into the changing academic environment of the future.
