The doctoral consortium will take place at the Wildcatter Ranch, a rustic setting 60 miles west of Ft. Worth.  The ranch is located on 1,500 acres along the Brazos River in the heart of the historic oil and ranching town of Graham, Texas.  The ranch offers a bucolic environment featuring horseback riding, canoeing on the Brazos, hiking trails, cattle feeding, fishing, and bird watching.

Doctoral Dissertation Award Competition 2015

Competition Winner

Apologies for the slight delay in this announcement and apologies that due to pressure of time it was not included in the awards on Monday lunchtime at ICIS, although it was presented later at the AIS Appreciation event.

All the submissions were of very high quality and can be honoured to have been nominated but, by a clear margin, this year's winner is:

Roman Lukyanenko from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada.

Roman’s Supervisor/Nominator was Jeff Parsons. The dissertation title is An Information Modeling Approach to Improve the Quality of User-Generated Content.

The following are a couple of comments from members of the Awards Panel which give a flavour of the work.

This research clearly identifies an important problem area, that of “user generated content” for information systems. There is thorough investigation of the problem areas with three experiments and a real-life system developed according to posited design principles. This system was tested in an interesting field experiment in “Citizen Science.” The contributions to theory of data quality and information modelling are clearly shown. I believe it represents work of the highest order in IS.

This dissertation is a model for all dissertations, not just those in the area of design and design science. The theoretical framework and reasoning are crisp and, unlike some other instances of information systems research, completely avoids abstruse analysis which is often mistaken for rigor. The empirical and experimental work is likewise properly sufficient for the purpose of making the dissertation’s conclusions credible to the reader, without overburdening the reader with unnecessary data. The use of successive experimentation, where one experiment builds on the results of the experiment preceding it, is so valuable and common-sensical that I wonder why I have not seen this done more frequently in past information systems research. Finally, the creation of an artifact — an actual system — that embodies the design principles learned in the preceding part of the dissertation serves well as the empirical pièce de résistance.

The Award is judged by the ICIS Doctoral Consortium Faculty Mentors from the previous year. So it fell to us, as last years Chairs, to organise.

We would like to thank the team for their ongoing work and commitment. They are, in no particular order, Ulrike Shultz, Liz Davidson, Du Rong, Ming-Hui Huang, Benoit Aubert, Allen Lee, Eric Monteiro, Arun Rai, Matti Rossi and Jan Pries-Heje.

Call for Nominations

The International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) invites nominations for the ACM SIGMIS Doctoral Dissertation Award Competition 2015. We look for outstanding doctoral dissertations around the globe in the field of information systems that have been completed in the time period from July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015. The competition is sponsored by SIGMIS, the ACM Special Interest Group on MIS.

Nominations should be submitted no earlier than midnight US EST (UTC -5), July 7, 2015, and no later than 5pm US EST (UTC -5), July 27, 2015. The candidate’s Ph.D. advisor or department chair should submit the nomination. Only one nomination can be made from an institution.

The ACM SIGMIS Doctoral Dissertation Competition 2015 is chaired by Guy Fitzgerald and Shirley Gregor. The judges include the faculty who participated at the ICIS 2014 doctoral consortium and possibly other faculty members from the discipline who would be appropriate given the content of the submissions.

Questions about this competition may be addressed to the co-chairs.

To be eligible for the 2015 competition, dissertations must have been completed in the time period from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. Authors must have successfully defended their dissertations and should have received the final approval and all required sign-offs on their dissertation document by the June 30, 2015 date. The author should have earned their PhD in Information Systems, and the dissertation needs to address an important issue in the field of IS. Dissertations that are not related to information systems phenomena will not be considered.

Works under consideration for publication may be submitted if they otherwise meet the submission criteria. Authors will retain full copyright of the submitted papers and dissertations.
Submission Process

All papers and supporting documents must be received 5pm US EST (UTC -5), on July 27, 2015. Any documents received after that date, and/or submissions without all of the appropriate documentation, will not be reviewed.

ICIS encourages submissions from different countries. However, the language of all submitted materials must be English. The following 3 items of documentation are required and they must be submitted as a single "zip" file:

  • A paper derived from the dissertation. If the dissertation consists of several essays, the paper should tie the essays in a coherent manner. The paper should be:
    • Single-authored (i.e., the paper must be written by the student);
    • Absolutely no more than 4,000 words in length, excluding the cover page, tables, graphs, references, and an abstract of no more than 200 words in length;
    • Formatted according to the MIS Quarterly manuscript guidelines;
    • Written in English;
    • Preceded by a cover page that includes a title and the student's name, institution, and email address.
  • The complete dissertation.
  • A letter from the student's dissertation advisor or department chair. The letter should attest that: the paper is based on the student's dissertation; the dissertation has met all requirements for graduation with a doctoral degree and has been successfully completed during the time period from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015; the paper and the dissertation are regarded by the dissertation committee as being representative of the best level of their department's doctoral work; the paper derived from the dissertation meets the following criteria: the paper is the work of the student under the guidance of the thesis supervisor (s) (name (s)); it represents high research standards, in terms of theory and methodology; it makes an original and substantive contribution to the understanding, development, or use of information systems.

Reviewing Process and Announcement of Winners

A panel of judges, consisting of the ICIS 2014 doctoral consortium faculty and possibly some other IS faculty, will review each submitted application. Their evaluations will be used to select those papers that merit more detailed assessment as final candidates for the award. The papers and dissertations of the finalists will be reviewed by a few members of the review panel, who will make the final selection. As this is an award competition, no reviews will be provided to the candidates or the nominators.

The winner of the dissertation award competition will be announced in December 2015 at ICIS in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. There will be no individual notification of the status of any candidate until the official announcement in December.

Call for Nominations

ICIS invites nominations for its 2015 Doctoral Consortium in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.

Since the 1980s, the Consortium has provided students who are doing their doctoral dissertations with the chance to present and obtain comments on their research, to hear about the work of their peers at other universities, and to gain an understanding of what academic and research careers are all about. It also offers students opportunities to make new friendships with other students and leading faculty from around the globe.

The Doctoral Consortium of the International Conference on Information Systems will begin on Wednesday afternoon at 5:00pm, December 9, 2015, with a welcome event, and will end with a late evening farewell reception on Friday, December 11. The event will be held at the Wildcatter Ranch in Graham, TX. Doctoral Consortium student participants will be invited to stay for three nights: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

A. Eligibility

Participation in the Consortium is by invitation only. Each university may submit only one nominee. If two units of a university hold separate memberships in AIS, they each may submit one nominee from their respective unit. Each student selected for the Consortium is expected to attend all Consortium meetings and activities, from the opening on Wednesday evening to the closing on Friday evening (i.e., participants will not be able to participate in any pre-ICIS activities that conflict with the Consortium schedule). Candidates who are not able to make this commitment to the Consortium should not apply.

Ph.D. students currently working on Information Systems dissertations are eligible for nomination submission. Candidates should have successfully defended their thesis proposals prior to December 1, 2015, although they need not have defended their proposals before the submission deadline.

Students who will have defended their final dissertations prior to December 1, 2015 will not be accepted. Nominated candidates should intend to pursue an academic career in Information Systems following the completion of their Ph.D. studies.

Prospective candidates should also note that the Consortium is designed as an intensive personal development experience and, therefore, participants should not bring guests to the Consortium. In addition, they should plan to stay at the Wildcatter Ranch where all Consortium participants will be housed.

Students who are selected to participate in the Consortium will be given instructions on how to prepare their research papers for presentation during the Consortium, following their selection.
B. Selection Process

Selection to the ICIS Doctoral Consortium is very competitive. Typically over 80 nominations are received each year and space is limited to 40 PhD students. Participants will be selected based on three things:

  • the quality of their proposed research and its potential significance and contribution to the IS discipline,
  • the potential contribution the student can make to the Consortium, and
  • the potential benefit of the Consortium to the student's research and professional development.

This assessment will be based on a review of the dissertation proposal paper prepared by the doctoral student. Previous attendance by other students from the nominating school is not a criterion for selecting Consortium participants.

Final Consortium selection will include a balance of students representing diverse research topics, methods, schools, and cultures.  The language of the Consortium is English, and all submitted materials must be in English. Students must have sufficient proficiency in English to participate in the presentations, discussions, and other activities.

Notification of Acceptance: Acceptance and rejection notifications will be sent on or around August 31, 2015.

Cost: All accepted students to the Consortium will be required to pay a registration fee to help defray part of the cost of their attendance at the Consortium. Students attending the Consortium will receive free registration to the ICIS 2015 conference in Fort Worth, which immediately follows the Consortium.

C. Documents Needed for Nomination Submission

(1) Nominee Information Sheet. Students complete the information on this sheet and submit it along with the other two documents mentioned below. Please click here to download the nominee information sheet.

(2) Nomination Letter.  Students must be nominated by an IS faculty member or academic.

  • There can only be one nominee per university or institution, unless different units of the institution each hold their own AIS membership. In that case, each unit of the university may nominate one student. Multiple nominations received from the same unit of a university or institution will be rejected.
  • The nomination should be in the form of a nomination letter from the nominating faculty member and should certify that:
    • the candidate is the sole nominee from the university or institution, or from that unit, if the university has more than one unit with an AIS membership;
    • the candidate meets the eligibility criteria mentioned above; and
    • the nominating institution guarantees to provide the consortium participation fee and travel funds to the nominee in the event that she or he is admitted to the consortium.
  • Ideally, the nominating faculty member should be the Director of the IS Doctoral Program or the IS Department’s Chairperson. If these individuals are not available, then the nominee’s Dissertation Advisor may nominate the student. However, if this is the case, then the dissertation advisor must be a faculty member at the nominee’s university or institution.
  • Students must submit the completed nomination letter during the online submission process; there is no process for handling nomination letters outside of the students’ submission via Manuscript Central.

(3) Candidate’s Dissertation Proposal Paper. The paper outlining the candidate's research should be in the form of a short report summarizing the student’s dissertation/thesis proposal. This part of the paper should not exceed 10 double-spaced pages, formatted as follows: Times New Roman or equivalent font, 11-point or 10-point font, double-spaced only (not 1.5), 1 inch margins all around 8.5 x 11 inch paper (or A4).  Also, the pages must be numbered.

This paper should include the research question, a justification for why and to whom the research is important. It also should include a brief literature review, a presentation of the theoretical basis for the work, a research model and hypotheses (if applicable), and a description of the research design.

This 10-page limit does not include a title page (incl. abstract), tables, figures, or references. Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but appended to immediately follow the 10-pages of text. References should appear last.

Two appendices of no more than one page each should be included. (These appendices must also follow the formatting guidelines outlined above.) The first appendix is a summary of any findings the student has as of May 31, 2015. The second appendix is an estimate of what still needs to be done to complete the dissertation as of May 31, 2015. We are requesting this information in order to gauge how far the nominee is in the dissertation process.

The complete document -- including the title page, main text, tables, figures, references and appendices -- should not exceed 20 pages. This page limit will be strictly enforced and the consortium co-chairs reserve the right to reject any candidates whose research paper fails to conform to these parameters.

D. Submission Process

Document Submission

All three documents – the Nomination Information Sheet, the Nomination Letter, and the Candidate’s Research Paper – must be submitted through the online submission system by the nominated doctoral student, not the nominating faculty member. The system will automatically combine the three items into one document.

The student should register with this system. Upon registration and email notification of the system-generated password, the student will be able to proceed with the submission by uploading the documents.

After registering and logging into Manuscript Central, select "Doctoral Consortium" as the "Track" and follow the directions. The user interface is fairly intuitive and most major IS journals and conferences rely on this manuscript submission system. Due Date and Time

All submissions must be received by the system no later than midnight, US Central time (UTC/GMT -6 hours), Sunday, June 7, 2015. Any documents uploaded to the system (but whose submission has not been finalized via the “submit” button) prior to this deadline can be modified until this time. Once the deadline is passed, however, incomplete or late submissions will be rejected. Multiple submissions received from the same university (or the same person) will be rejected. If the university’s different units hold separate AIS memberships, submissions from each of the units will be considered.

E. Step-by-Step Instructions for Submitting to Manuscript Central

Here are several step-by-step instructions on how to upload your Nominee Information Sheet, Nomination Letter, and Proposal using the submission website:

          1. Create a login via the manuscript submission system at
          2. Log in using your login and password.
          3. On the main menu, click on “Author Center” to submit your application packet and follow Step 4 onwards.
          4. Click on the link to submit a new manuscript (on the right side of the page).
          5. Under Track select "Doctoral Consortium".
          6. Add Title, check the box about Previously published work, and click "Save & Continue."
          7. Add Keywords then click "Save & Continue."
          8. You will not have any co-authors, so to move to the next page click '"Save & Continue."
          9. Now you need to upload all 3 files in the following order (Acceptable file types are .DOC, .RTF, and .PDF. When you are done click "Save & Continue." Note that .DOCX files are not permitted):

          10. View your uploaded files by clicking on PDF. When you are finished, click "Save & Continue."
